What is a Crypto Wallet?
A cryptocurrency wallet is essential for using Circl. This guide will explain what wallets are, why you need one, and walk you through creating your first wallet step by step.
What is a Crypto Wallet?
A crypto wallet is a tool that allows you to store, send, and receive cryptocurrency. Think of it like a digital bank account, but instead of being controlled by a bank, you have full control over your funds. Your wallet has a unique address (like an account number) that you use to receive crypto.
Why Do You Need a Wallet?
On Circl, you use cryptocurrency (specifically USDC) to subscribe to creators, purchase content, and send tips. To withdraw earnings or deposit funds, you'll need an external wallet to send crypto from or receive crypto to.
Types of Wallets
There are several types of crypto wallets, each with different trade-offs between convenience and security:
For most Circl users, a browser extension wallet like MetaMask or a mobile wallet like Trust Wallet is the perfect balance of security and convenience.
Our Recommended Wallets
Here are the wallets we recommend for Circl users, especially if you're new to crypto:
How to Create a MetaMask Wallet (Recommended)
- 1Go to metamask.io and click "Download"
- 2Choose your browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Brave) and install the extension
- 3Click the MetaMask icon in your browser and select "Create a new wallet"
- 4Create a strong password for your wallet
- 5IMPORTANT: Write down your 12-word Secret Recovery Phrase on paper. Never share this with anyone!
- 6Confirm your recovery phrase by selecting the words in order
- 7Your wallet is ready! You'll see your wallet address (starts with 0x...)
Your Secret Recovery Phrase is the master key to your wallet. Anyone with these 12 words can access all your funds. Write it down on paper and store it somewhere safe. Never save it digitally or share it with anyone - including Circl support!
How to Create a Trust Wallet (Mobile)
- 1Download Trust Wallet from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android)
- 2Open the app and tap "Create a new wallet"
- 3Accept the terms of service
- 4Write down your 12-word recovery phrase on paper
- 5Verify your recovery phrase by selecting words in the correct order
- 6Set up a passcode or biometric lock
- 7Your wallet is ready to use!
Adding the Polygon Network
Circl uses the Polygon network for low-fee transactions. Most wallets support Polygon by default. In MetaMask, you can add Polygon by clicking the network dropdown at the top and selecting "Polygon Mainnet". If it's not listed, you can add it manually or through chainlist.org.
Your Wallet Address
Your wallet address is like your account number. It starts with "0x" followed by a long string of letters and numbers (e.g., 0x1234...abcd). You can share this address with anyone who needs to send you crypto. You'll use this address when withdrawing from Circl.
You can copy your wallet address by clicking on it in your wallet app. Always double-check addresses before sending crypto - transactions cannot be reversed!
